Scum: Painful illusion

21/04/10  ||  Smalley

Another average metal band from Italy?? Dammit! Well, the intro track here did have some okay riffs/soloing, but the guitar performances on this record leave something to be desired, as does the crappy production, which gives the guitars a muddy, low-fi sound quality, and also rendered the drums way too loud, doing their skilled drummer zero favors. While the vocals here are definitely on the death/hardcore-bro side of things (as was the music), I’ve heard a lot worse, and this guy isn’t quite awful , anyway. Not good at all, no, but still…

The acoustic/clean guitar work in some of these tracks actually turned out to be really good, so perhaps Scum should pursue that direction more. Maybe try to sound more like Aghora than Hatebreed, ya know? A few of the riffs here already reminded me of Aghora, so it wouldn’t take much work for them to make that change. Anyway, overall, none of the tracks here made any less mediocre an impression than the next, but maybe these guys could’ve made a pretty decent album (despite the hardcore element) if they had better production/vocals, since their songwriting seemed basically fine. Or, maybe I’m just imagining that.

Whatever, I’m not going to spend any more thought on it.
